Caerphilly in Wales and the immense castle

The town of Caerphilly, which is only a few kilometres away from Cardiff, is dominated by its castle, and throughout the Middle Ages, Caerphilly was considered to be more important than Cardiff.

In addition to this, it is home to one of the best examples of mediaeval military architecture still extant in all of Europe. During the battle to conquer Glamorgan in the 13th century, Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Gloucester, constructed the fortress as part of the effort.
