The town of Caerphilly, which is only a few kilometres away from Cardiff, is dominated by its castle, and throughout the Middle Ages, Caerphilly was considered to be more important than Cardiff.
The fortification is the largest Welsh Castle, and the size of Windsor Castle is the only one that can compete with it. In addition to this, it is home to one of the best examples of mediaeval military architecture still extant in all of Europe. During the battle to conquer Glamorgan in the 13th century, Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Gloucester, constructed the fortress as part of the effort. There was heavy fighting between Gilbert, his descendants, and Welsh princes during this time. It is the second largest castle in Britain and it occupies over 30 acres of land. It is well known that Caerphilly was the first place in Britain to implement concentric castle walls, and it is also notable for its enormous guard gates.
Caerphilly Castle was constructed with high-ranking apartments, very much like the dormitories that were constructed in Chepstow Castle during the same time period. The Great Hall in mediaeval times was divided by wooden partitions, bright decorations, with rich and beautiful carvings, and was heated from a great central chimney. In addition, the Great Hall featured rich and detailed carvings.
Gilbert de Clare, a Norman lord, was largely responsible for the construction of this massive fortification toward the end of the 13th century. wall within the walls,” also utilised a powerful defensive water system that included lakes and three manmade islands. this design was known as the “wall within the walls.”
The castle was renovated in the year 800 by the Marquis of Bute, but nothing appears to be able to fix the infamous leaning tower of the castle, which is tilted at an angle of ten degrees off from straight, and which also manages to stick out further than the tower of Pisa.
The great hall of the castle is likely the most impressive part of the structure. In this hall, models of life-size operational siege engines are displayed, making it one of the most magnificent and distinctive elements of the castle.
The crumbly white cheese with a salty and somewhat acid flavour that is distinctive to the town was created for the first time in 1831 and found its genesis in the farms that surround the town. The town gained fame as a result of this cheese.
